Cantilever gate systems are designed for applications where sliding gates are required but the installation of a ground track is neither possible nor desirable. Cantilever gate systems are often chosen for industrial or commercial installations due to the robustness of the cantilever mechanism which provides a high degree of security although they work just as well on residential gates. The Rolling Center cantilever systems are compatible with our range of electric gate automation, access control, and gate safety equipment.

What is a Cantilever Gate?

Cantilever gates are those that slide above the ground without a track, using a “cantilever” system. The track is welded to the bottom of the gate frame where 2 support carriages are secured into a concrete foundation to the side of the entrance at a set distance between them. This provides a counterbalance and supports the gate when it’s either fully open or fully closed. It’s important to consider fitting guide rollers or guide brackets to the top of the gate to provide stability too.

As the cantilever gate is hung above the ground, it must be constructed properly to keep them from falling over. The materials used for these gates must be strong and able to withstand the force of gravity, heavy winds, and more.

What are the Advantages of a Cantilever Gate?

Cantilever gates have many advantages over other types of gates, including:

Better Use of Space

Cantilever gates use space more efficiently by using the space adjacent to the gate entrance rather than the driveway. This means you can free up more space for vehicles and for this reason they tend to be a better choice for small spaces such as a residential driveway.

In addition, the foundation for the gate is positioned away from the entrance, making the cantilever gate much less intrusive. These gates are also ideally suited for uneven and sloped ground.

Cantilever gates also have a great appearance and an efficient design that can add a touch of décor to a property.

Gate Automation & Access Controls

Cantilever gates are a great choice of gate that integrates simply with both automation and access controls. However, the ground should be free of obstacles and obstructions so the gate can work correctly.

The access control features are usually easy to use. Some of the most common access control systems include keypads, key fobs and intercom systems.

Less Maintenance

Another benefit of cantilever gates is that they can be installed using a high resistance polyamidic or steel material. These rollers don’t require lubrication and the polyamidic wheels provide a quieter sound against the track opposed to steel wheels. On the other hand, swing gate hinges need frequent lubrication to keep them working properly.

What’s more, these gates have less chance of damage from vehicles and other potential forces in the environment. For example, another gate style may have a track concreted to the ground that’s constantly run over. This can easily damage the track. So, the cantilever gate may have more longevity than other gates.

Cantilever gates are also less affected by debris. For instance, gates that have wheels can be blocked by small debris such as rocks, snow, and ice. Cantilever gates are less likely to suffer from the same problems.

Cheaper

Cantilever gates can also work out cheaper than swing gates when factoring in the cost of labour, less groundworks requirement, safety, and automation required.

More Weight

Cantilever gates can hold much more weight than a tracked system. Rolling Center cantilever gates have systems that can go up to 7000kg in weight opposed to a tracked gate which can only take a maximum of 3000kg.
