Swing vs Sliding Gate Hardware: What’s the Difference?

Swing gate hardware relies on hinges mounted to a post, so the gate arcs open — it needs clear space on the side it swings into. Sliding gate hardware runs the gate along a track (or, for cantilever systems, on internal rollers), so it needs a flat run of space alongside the opening but nothing in front of or behind it. Sloping or uneven drives, and narrow entrances, tend to favour sliding or cantilever hardware; flat, open sites often suit swing gates and are usually the more cost-effective option.

Generally we’d recommend keeping components matched, particularly for tracks and wheels, gear rack and pinions, or cantilever carriages and rails, since tolerances between brands can differ. Hinges, locks and handles are usually more flexible.
