Aluminium Gate Safety Tips: How To Safely Install Your Gate

As a leading UK supplier of aluminium gates, we take gate safety seriously and always ensure our clients take home reliable, secure and good quality gates for their home or commercial property.

But it’s not just the quality of the gate that matters, you also need to understand the best way to keep yourself and those using the gate safe, both during installation and throughout use.

Here’s a useful guide from the Rolling Center team on our top aluminium gate safety tips.

How to safely install and use an aluminium gate

  1. Assess the location Before investing in an aluminium gate then you should initially assess the area around where you’d like to place it. If the desired location is near a busy road for example, you’ll likely require an automated gate that opens inwards rather than outwards. You’ll need to ensure the gate has enough space to fully open and close.Measure the available area around where you’d like to place your gate to better understand what’s achievable and what’s safe to install.
  2. Ensure the area is ground level When measuring your gate area, ensure the ground is completely level with no gaps. Any gaps could be a serious safety threat to small animals or children who could get trapped in the gap between the ground and your aluminium gate.
  3. Install photocells around your gate Place photocells sensors on the inside of your aluminium gate and the outside (if on a road or path) to allow the gate’s automated features to detect light or movement quickly.
  4. Account for pedestrian access You may want to deter pedestrians from using the aluminium gate access and reserve gate usage for vehicles only. In this case, ensure there is an option for safe pedestrian access to the area and invest in signage to make this clear.
  5. Invest in flashing lights for your gate To further prevent accidents, ensure your gate has flashing lights in place for when it’s in motion, so that even during evenings hours any gate activity is clearly recognisable.
  6. Identify any trap points Trap points include gate bars and hinges on gate posts. Invest in finger trap guards and safety edges for these areas to avoid unwanted accidents.
  7. Invest in gate-fall safety To avoid the unlikely event that your gate hinge falls off during use, we recommend installing a Cavo on your aluminium gate. This is a safety protection cable which connects to your gate and stops it failing should the gate hinge disconnect.
  8. Keep up with maintenance checks
Ensure your aluminium gate has a safety check by a maintenance professional at least every 6 months.
