What is sliding door track?

Sliding door track is the rail a top-hung door runs along. The track is fixed above the opening, the door hangs from hangers or trolleys that run inside or along it, and a guide at floor level keeps the bottom of the door in line. Monorail track like ours carries the full weight of the door, so choosing the right size and fixing it to a sound structure matters more than any other part of the installation.

What we supply

Our range covers monorail track in three sizes, 80, 81 and 82, with each size suited to progressively larger and heavier doors. Each is available in two finishes:

• Galvanised track (80Z, 81Z, 82Z): protected against corrosion, so it suits external doors, agricultural buildings, yards and anywhere exposed to weather.
• Non-galvanised track (80G, 81G, 82G): a lower-cost option for internal doors and dry, sheltered locations.

Where it’s used

• Agricultural buildings: barn, livestock and machinery shed doors.
• Industrial and commercial units: workshops, warehouses, loading bays and plant rooms.
• Yards and stores: any wide opening where a hinged door isn’t practical.

How to choose sliding door track

• Door weight and width: these decide the track size. Heavier and wider doors need a larger section of track and more hangers. Check the load rating in each product’s specification, and ask our team if you’re near the limit.
• Internal or external: galvanised track for anything exposed to the weather, non-galvanised for internal use.
• Track length: for a single sliding door, the track usually needs to be around twice the door’s width so the door can slide fully clear of the opening. Order in lengths that suit, and use joint pins or brackets where lengths meet.
• Supporting structure: the track needs a solid fixing along its full length. On older buildings, check the header or steelwork can carry the door before ordering.
• Matching hardware: the hangers, guide rollers and stops must match the track size, so specify the whole system together.

Sliding door track vs sliding gate track

They’re not interchangeable. Sliding door track is top-hung: it goes above the opening and the door hangs from it. FAQs

What size sliding door track do I need? Track size is determined by the weight and width of your door. Our 80, 81 and 82 series cover progressively heavier doors. Check the load rating on each product, or send our team your door’s dimensions, material and weight and we’ll specify it for you.

How long should the track be? As a rule, the track should be around twice the width of the door so it can slide fully clear of the opening. Where a longer run is needed, lengths can be joined.

What’s the difference between galvanised and non-galvanised track? Galvanised track has a protective coating that resists corrosion, so it’s the right choice for external and agricultural use. Non-galvanised track costs less and suits internal, sheltered installations.

Can I use this track for an interior or barn-style door? Our monorail track is industrial gear designed for heavy agricultural, commercial and industrial doors. It can be used on large internal doors, but it isn’t a decorative interior barn door kit.

Do I need anything else with the track? Yes. A complete top-hung installation needs hangers to carry the door, a floor guide, end stops and fixings. All are available in our sliding door hardware range, and they should be matched to the track size.

Can I automate a sliding door on this track? Door automation is available for pedestrian and commercial entrance doors, and is a separate product range. For large industrial sliding doors, speak to our technical team about what’s suitable.
